Diary Studies

We will plan diary studies with cruise workers, on-call workers, temporary agency workers and technicians and managers who temporarily work in another city/country and are away from their families (exo-workers).
We will use a quantitative diary design to investigate within-person fluctuations in boundary management and relate this to the work-family conflict, work-family enrichment and workers’ well-being. An important advantage of diary research is that it relies less on retrospective recall than regular surveys, since the questions relate to individuals’ perceptions, feelings, and behaviors on a certain day.
Participation in the study is voluntary, confidentiality of data will be assured.

In phase 1 of the study, participants will be invited to sign an informed consent form with the principal investigator. In this phase of the study, the workers’ internet-based survey will assess demographic variables, the permeability, flexibility and control of boundaries and organizational and family support.

Phase 2 will consist of the daily diary phase of the study and last for working days, excluding weekends or breaks. During this phase, participants will be surveyed about their daily strategies for management boundaries and the extent to which they integrate their work and family roles.

In phase 3 the workers’ internet-based survey will assess the work-family conflict and work-family enrichment and well-being (i.e., engagement, burnout, health perceptions and satisfaction with life).
